Dear Reader, Issue 25

Every new year brings another year of Niv, and while we’re ringing in 5786, we’re also celebrating five years of Niv!

We started this adventure with the launch of our first issue on September 18, 2020, during the pandemic. It was a time where many felt isolated and Niv allowed us to bring some Jewish joy and chutzpah to you from around the world through stories large and small. We are still living through the effects of the pandemic, and the phrase “the world is on fire” is something each of us hears at least once a week. But, we remain steadfast in our goal to deliver arts and culture reporting that illuminates varied Jewish perspectives from people who make a difference in the community here in Canada and abroad. Niv has, and will continue to share viewpoints that are as vibrant and pluralistic as the Jewish experience.

In Hebrew Niv means expression, and it’s always been our goal to provide the full range of Jewish expression to our readers.

Issue 25 marks the last few weeks of Summer and the start of Fall— by now, this time of year should simply be renamed “High Holidays.” On our digital pages you will trek to camp in winter, question the appeal of honey, visit Dunhuang, China, then have trouble finding food at the airport, be comforted by quilting, and experience a bad shabbos. And there’s more!

It seems that each year our letter to you is twinged with a kind of sadness for the year we had and the hope that the next one will be sweeter. Our hope continues. And so, despite everything, we wish you a sweet new year ahead and a happy, reflective, and warm High Holiday season.

Sweetly,

Orly & Clarrie
